There are many reasons to own a dehumidifier, but does a dehumidifier cool a room? It’s a question that many will ask, so let’s dig in to find some answers.

Humidity and the Effect on Temperature

Humidity itself doesn’t raise the temperature but it can cause it to feel warmer. The reason behind this is that humidity stops us from being able to cool ourselves down.

We lower our body temperature by sweating. When the sweat is evaporated from your skin, your body temperature goes down. When there is already moisture in the air, the sweat can’t escape the body causing us to be unable to cool. While humidity doesn’t actually increase the temperature, it does cause the air to feel warmer.

Hoes Does a Dehumidifier Cool a Room?

Most air conditioners actually have a built-in dehumidifier function to draw moisture from the air. In the times when you don’t need air conditioning, you can run a dehumidifier to just focus on the moisture instead of actually cooling an area.

The only job a dehumidifier has to do is reduce humidity in the air. In addition, it does a far better job of this task than an air conditioner.

Not only does a dehumidifier cool a room, but it also prevents mould, mildew and odours from occurring within the home. Because of this, the life of your furniture, home décor, and ceiling fans will all be extended as well.

The dehumidifier uses warm and cool coils in an effort to remove humidity. A small fan will draw the air from the room and it will pass through these coils. When the humid air meets both coils at once, the water is condensed from the air. Then, the water can be collected in a bucket or extracted through a drain pipe that is set up.

5 Other Ways that a Dehumidifier Will Help Your Home

Cooling a room is just one of the benefits that a dehumidifier can offer. Here are a few other reasons to consider running a dehumidifier in your home:

Allergies

Allergies can be triggered by dust, mould and mildew. This is especially true in areas with higher humidity levels such as the bathroom or laundry room. Dehumidifiers can reduce the moisture that supports allergen growth.

Comfort

Proper humidity levels create a comfortable environment. In addition, the air quality will be greatly improved.

Moisture

Over time, the excessive moisture in a home can lead to structural issues. Condensation that has built up will lead to mildew and mould on the home’s structure but also to furniture. Some early signs of issues can include peeling paint or wallpaper, stains or odours.

Pest Control

Humidity tends to bring spiders and other pests with it. These nuisances will gravitate toward moist environments and can become an issue inside the house.

Energy Costs

By using your air conditioner more efficiently, you can reduce your energy costs. A dehumidifier will remove moisture from the air causing your air conditioner to work less. While running a dehumidifier may seem like an expensive option to begin with, you will notice savings in the future.

Conclusion

Picture of a room before we asked "Does a dehumidifier cool a room?"In review, a dehumidifier doesn’t actually cool a room, but it does support the cooling of an environment by removing the humidity. This leads to a more comfortable and healthier home for the entire family.
